CHAPTER 8

LOGAN

Sitting along the wall with the rest of the support staff, I listened to the big wigs on both sides negotiate. Well, I wanted to call it negotiate, but it was a lot of negative responses from the humans every time the Norlons tried again. My fellow humans had me feeling like I was watching a presidential debate—the kind where they made a lot of promises and insisted that they had all the answers, but never actually said anything. And they were the ones being offered solutions! Alam and the rest were handing over whatever we could need to improve our lives, and these world leaders were saying variations of the phrase “I’ll think about it and get back to you.”

I could understand that some of it was overwhelming and maybe they didn’t trust how great the Norlons insisted some thing was. So, fine, they could test the thing until they felt better about it. I really could understand that and even support that way of thinking. But it was starting to sound like the human politicians weren’t interested in testing or trying. It felt like they were refusing, but wanting to sound like there was still a chance, stringing the Norlons along.

Like with the nanobots. Doctor Revazi was willing to hand over not just vats of the things, but the knowledge and tech necessary to make the microscopic robots. I was pretty sure we humans didn’t have anything of the sort, so why wouldn’t my leaders embrace the opportunity? But they weren’t! These fat cats were nodding their heads and making noises like they were fascinated, but not one of them said anything close to wanting the nanobots, research, or technology.

Bet if there had been a single human scientist in the room right now, they would’ve been weeping. Hell, I wanted to cry from watching these people operate because Revazi just said curing certain types of cancer might be possible. And the humans were blustering about testing, distribution, insurance, jobs…

“Then we’ll start our own company,” I muttered, arms crossed and slumping in my chair, hating every second of this bullshit.

“A company?” the Norlon sitting beside me said. I was getting better about remembering the types, and I thought she was a Lago since she looked like a fox.

“I’m just seriously getting frustrated with all this,” I said by way of apology for distracting her.

“No, no. Tell me what you mean.” She looked open and eager. After hours of listening to my people say no, I couldn’t resist telling her everything on my mind.

“Well, okay.” I sat up and kept my voice low. “If the governments don’t want to distribute whatever it is the Norlons are offering, then the Norlons should do it themselves. Start companies—like a company that distributes nanobots. People can go online and fill out a form stating what’s wrong with them, include—I don’t know—a note from their doctor or something, and they get a vial of the right kind of nanobots. Or maybe it’s a pill or a shot of juice—whatever.
